A New Force in Library Storage
Rackline provided a complete service, working closely with us during
every step of the project.
An efficient storage solution was paramount for the Joint Services
Command and Staff College (JSCSC) when it transferred 200,000 books,
monographs and journals to its new library in Shrivenham.
Prior to the move, the college's students - officers of the British
and overseas armed forces - had been accessing information at various
single service locations, but the relocation gave the college a
central library
Chris Hobson, Head of Library Services at JSCSC, said: "We
required a shelving system which would not only reflect the prestigious
image of the college, but which would fit in with the unusual semi-circular
design of the building. We also needed to be confident that our
historical and often irreplaceable books and journals would be protected
and that we would have sufficient capacity for high volume storage
in our archive areas.
"At any one time, there are more than 500 officers from all
over the world studying here, so the way we look after our books
and journals is extremely important. Many influencial people from
the military, government and academia also visit the college, so
it is imperative that the aesthetic appeal of the library is upheld."
After a full audit of JSCSC's requirements, Rackline, specialists
in complete storage solutions, recommended Proform open access static
shelving for the main library, with custom designed end panels in
cherry, and high capacity Proform Multitrak mobile shelving for
the archive area
Chris Hobson commented: "Rackline provided a complete service,
working closely with us during every step of the project to ensure
that our needs were met. Once the system was designed, we visited
the company's headquarters in Staffordshire to view the manufacturing
process. Installation was quick and efficient, causing minimum disruption
and we maintained contact with
Rackline throughout."
Rackline's owner and managing director Brian Horan, comments: "Storage
solutions for libraries need to meet a whole host of requirements.
Protection of books and journals is extremely important, as is accessibility
for a large number of users. With more and more libraries dealing
with ever-increasing stock, efficient high capacity storage is also
a major priority."
Other libraries to take advantage of Rackline's complete storage
solutions include the BBC Music Library, The British Library, Eton
College Library, The Law Commission Library and Glasgow University
Library.
