Newspaper’s Archive Move
Associated Newspapers is one of the largest newspaper groups in
the U.K publishing Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard,
London Metro, Ireland on Sunday and Loot.
The Archive Department housed in their HQ Northcliffe House Kensington
was costing near on
£1m per annum in floor space costs. It was decided to relocate
to a building near London Bridge with much lower overheads. This
would free up the high cost Kensington space for journalist work
stations.
The contents to be re-housed included Photo archives, Transparencies,
Wallets in 4 drawer filing cabinets, Card index cabinets in both
metal and timber and Bays of shelving. All in all around 12,000.00
records!
Rackline conducted a full audit of the building where the Archive
Department was to be re-housed.
Problems encountered included circular support pillars throughout,
low height ceiling with pipe work running across in parts and walls
that were not at 90 degree angles to each other.
The system Rackline installed was Multitrak Mobile shelving comprising
of 345 bays giving 2,064 linear metres. These were complemented
by Profile static shelving along some walls.
The flexibility of design when utilising Multitrak allowed for bays
to built around the pillars and allowed for maximum number level
of shelves from floor to ceiling.
Multitrak is designed for carriages up to 15 metres long and with
loads of up to 20 tonnes per carriage. The powerfull guidance and
drive system ensures the carriages remain perfectly aligned on the
tracks. The move enabled the client to sort out the records into
a more efficient system and is delighted with the £100k installation.
“Rackline’s design and installation
team played a crucial part in this unusual building installation.”
