provide a Fast Reaction for Dounreay
One
of the most important collections in the history of nuclear energy
has been preserved for future generations after a £400,000
investment in a new archive facility at Dounreay.
The storage system selected by United Kingdom
Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) for the Archive facility at their
Dounreay site was supplied by Rackline.
Rackline were chosen partly for their ability to make design changes
to the computerised storage plans actually on site, thereby
saving time and expense.
The archive is home to some 10 million pages of paper records contained
in 21,000 boxes that would stretch for three kilometres if laid
end to end.
On the eve of the site’s 50th anniversary, 230 tonnes of records
had been brought together and put into the Rackline Multitrak mobile
storage system.
Rackline’s Multitrak mobile storage system uses multiple torque
tubes and wheels to accommodate long bases.
In UKAEA’S installation up to 8 metres long. Powerful guidance
and drive system ensures the carriages remain perfectly aligned
on the tracks.
Rackline installed a Multitrak system comprising of :
- 197 bays (1,981 linear metres) in Storeroom 1
- 185 bays (1,972 linear metres) in Storeroom 2
- 60 bays (528 linear metres) in the Library.
