As specialists in museum storage systems, we certainly believe that the UK’s museums and galleries need to be celebrated, so we are always delighted when May comes around. Three UK-wide events take place this month, celebrating our history as well as the institutions that help us to celebrate it.

Museum Shelving and Storage

May is Local and Community History Month. Running for the whole of this month, this special event aims to help spread awareness of local history and promote history in general to local communities throughout the UK. By encouraging all members of the community to participate, the event aims to encourage a strong feeling of community spirit and pride in the local history that binds communities together.

As part of Local and Community History Month, events are taking place at museums, galleries, schools and libraries throughout the UK.

Taking place from Wednesday the 17th May to Saturday the 20th May is the Museums at Night Festival. During the event, museums and galleries throughout the UK are staying open for longer hours and holding late events to help shine a light on “Britain’s sparkling culture and heritage”. By opening their doors later, museums, galleries and heritage sites offer people the chance to experience their events in a different way.

In the middle of Museums at Night is International Museum Day on the 18th of May. Taking place on this date every year since 1977, this event takes place throughout the world, celebrating museums and raising awareness on how important they are in the development of society. This year, the theme chosen by the International Council of Museums is “Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums”.

Although International Museum Day is on the 18th of May, museums are encouraged to organise events on and around the day, with some organised events lasting a day, weekend, or even a full week.

With so many events taking place throughout the month, many museums and galleries will be adding to their collections, resulting in the need for extra storage facilities. With over 25 years of experience in developing storage solutions for museums, Rackline can provide standardised or bespoke storage systems to practically any item in need of storage. Our systems are designed to keep precious items safe and secure, sealed away from light, dirt, dust and other contaminants when necessary, but also to make the most of the storage space available.
