Storage solutions in a museum can often fall by the waste side. Over the years, your collection can take on a life of its own and before you know it, you are surrounded! Unlike in a home where you can have a good old fashioned clear-out and de-clutter, a museum has treats and treasures that can not be parted with.

You can’t just throw out the old and bring in the new. But you can find it a new and better home. For all you curators out there, it is time to think about effective storage solutions. Not simply a large room for you to keep things in, but carefully constructed storage solutions with a home and a place for everything.

Imagine a museum storage space with racks, cabinets and drawers. Where everything was carefully tagged, logged and you knew just where to find what you needed. Where everything could grow old gracefully.

Your museum storage should be a collectors paradise, not a hoarders heaven. These objects deserve the respect that you could give them, with Rackline storage.

If it is time to do your inventory then it could be time to rethink your current storage solutions too. In fact, if you are in the London area tomorrow or Thursday why not come and visit us at the Museum and Heritage Show?

This fantastic show will be held in Earls Court on the 16th and 17th May and will have plenty to offer you. We will be ready and waiting to take your questions and show you how storage solutions can transform your museum.

You will find us at stand L2 and you can register for your free pass AND jump the queues. So make sure you make the most of this opportunity and help your artifacts grow old, gracefully.

You have probably heard the term ‘paperless’ office bounced around over recent months. With the increase of technology and everything being ‘electronic’ it has been thought that a paperless office was really a possible solution.

Here at Rackline we are not dismissing the idea, but is it really possible to be truly paperless? Most of you will agree that your offices are full of paper and a lot of it you either don’t need or, could do with organising better. Rather than a paperless office what you really need is a better storage solution.

Here are the reasons why a truly paperless office would struggle to take off:

People still need to sign documents. A lot of your clients will request that documents are ‘wet’ signed rather than electronically

People like to proofread a physical document and means that you are more likely to spot errors.

You are required to store copies of certain documents by law, from tax records to client documents and confidential information

Yes, it is wise to archive documents that you are not using and to store things electronically. But maybe it is time to consider suitable storage solutions that could benefit your office?

You may find that an archive storage system is just what you need to store the documents you don’t need everyday. Or what about some office storage systems that are easy to use, space efficient and look sleek and stylish too?

Before you consider chucking all your paper out the window, why not give us a call or have a look at our range of products. Storage solutions mean a more organised and productive office. Try it!

Did you know that here at Rackline we hold a place on the Government Procurement Service? Formally known as the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) it is part of an executive agency of the Cabinet Office.

What exactly is it?

The role of the GPS is to maximise procurement efficiency and value for money within the public sector. It also encourages reducing time spent on the procurement process as a whole.

How are Rackline involved?

We hold a place on the framework agreement for the supply, delivery and installation of high density steel storage. This includes relevant inserts, pockets, wallets, labels and storage media.

Rackline storage is a preferred supplier which means that our products have been benchmarked against other companies to ensure:

Quality of product

Efficiency

Value for money

This is great news for both Rackline and the Government as it means that the public sector companies can go right to the heart of the matter, without the usual tendering process and bartering for cost reduction.

Speaking out about Rackline’s place on the GPS is Managing Director of Rackline, Lindsey Khan. She has said, ‘Rackline are delighted to have been awarded the framework agreement from the Government Procurement Service. Our wide ranging portfolio from the traditional mobile and static storage systems, cabinets and rotary units to the innovative low level Filestation system mean that we have solutions suitable for all the storage demands of the public sector.

‘Our specialist support teams offer a full audit of the area, layout drawings and detailed proposal free of charge and without obligation.’

To find out more simply visit the Government Buying Solutions website.

Today we are in the news after completing storage solutions work with three major universities. These three projects combined are worth around £1m. The work was carried out at Leeds, Reading and Aberdeen university. The storage solutions have included a £500,000 project at the £57m library at Aberdeen University.

The three storage solution projects were, in themselves, quite challenging. Speaking on behalf of Rackline is Tracy Goodwin, commercial director, who said. ‘Over the years Rackline has worked on many educational projects so it is great to add these three high profile universities to our client portfolio.

‘Each university had their own specific requirements for their project and we provided storage solutions around their individual needs. Our products are flexible and can be created to fit into any space so we could easily fulfill their requirements.’

The feedback from these three storage projects has been really positive. The Conservator and Preservation Manager at Reading University, Geoff Gardner, has said, ‘Rackline’s work at Reading University was to relocate up to half a million books following the closure of our Bulmershe Campus.

‘This project was challenging due to the high number of books we had to relocate. Rackline were really flexible in their approach and provided storage which maximised on capacity.’

If you need to re-house or relocate books then why not give us a call? We work on many projects such as this and have expertise in providing the right storage solutions for your problem.

When people visit museums they are, of course, mesmerised by the artifacts. Whether it is the National History Museum, the Science Museum, or even a local museum, you can’t help but feel in awe. But what about all those artifacts that don’t make it to the shelves and cases? Where do they go? A museum is not just a place of history, but a fantastic storage solution.

A museum is given, and buys, thousands of items each year, most of which can’t be displayed. But unlike a home, you can’t just have a spring clean, they all have to be carefully stored away.

Archive storage in this instance is essential. Here at Rackline our storage solutions and designed to fit the needs of museums. This is because they maximise the space available and help to store artifacts in the safest of ways.

So how have we helped?

Well, take the Dacorum Heritage Museum for example in Hertfordshire. As is the case with most museums it had a serious storage problem and a storage solution needed to be found fast.

From photographs and postcards to artwork and fossilised roman bread, it all needed to be carefully stored and had actually led to a health and safety issue.

Having run out of space it was overloading its existing shelving system.

The storage solution

Here, at Rackline, we created specialised storage systems using the Monotrak mobile system. Profile shelving was also mounted onto the Monotrak mobile bases and a bespoke shelf size was also created. This increased the overall storage capacity by 50% meaning around 250,000 objects could be stored safely.

A new shelving system also provided around 300 linear metres of storage. The new storage solutions provided the Dacorum Heritage Museum with exactly what they needed. This meant that everyone who worked at the museum could get on with their day job.

Richard Lewis, the Curator at the Dacorum Heritage Museum, has said, “The Museum Store is a focal point and as such is very much a working environment rather than simply a storage area. The new shelving will benefit the collections, visitors, volunteers and staff“.

If you want to find out how we can help your museum then just give us a call!

A local library shouldn’t be taken for granted. Here at Rackline we have had the pleasure of helping libraries to transform their storage solutions and shelving to create a unique space.

A local library should be a place of peace, tranquility and ease in terms of finding what you are looking for. Whether it is used to borrow books or as a place of education for children and schools, a library should make full use of the space it has.

That is why we pride ourselves on our bespoke library storage systems. Every library is different and has unique items to display. So, if you are looking for a new storage system in your library, then look no further.

Take the work that we did at Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre. With new premises and the need for better storage facilities, we designed a bespoke storage solution system.

Books

If you have a wide variety of books that need to be well presented and easy to access then a suitable storage solution is vital. You will save your customers time and it will also reduce the time staff have to spend showing customers around.

Articles

If you have specific artifacts or articles that require special attention then a bespoke archive system is essential. The air flow and temperature need to be just right. The articles also need to be clearly labelled for easy access. At Rackline we understand the importance of making sure that your articles and artifacts are stored correctly and safely.

Maps

We have created bespoke hanging map storage systems. These allow maps to be taken from their hanging location, used and replaced, without any damage to the maps. It saves them from being touched and rolled which can, in turn, damage them.

These are just examples of some of the storage facilities we can provide for your library. So, if you are thinking of having a tidy-up, change or a complete overhaul, why not give us a call? We would be happy to discuss and give you advice on what is best for your library.
