The Discovery Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne is one of the major
museums in the North East of England. The collections of artefacts ably
demonstrate the rich historical heritage of the region.
Because of a lack of space at the Museum itself, a signifi cant proportion of
the collection has had to be stored in a remote warehouse where access
to the public is impossible. In order to remedy this, a decision was taken
to completely refurbish the basement areas and install mobile and static
shelving designed specifi cally to accommodate the wide variety of objects.
Rackline fi rst became involved in July 2007 when we had our initial
meeting and in due course tender documents were issued giving precise
specifi cations of the requirements for the various rooms. We produced
highly detailed drawings together with a competitive quotation which led
us an invitation to a meeting with representatives of the museum and their
consultants, Turner and Townsend Ltd.
Following this meeting, we carried out detailed site surveys and viewed
the collections following which we were able to offer some suggested
improvements which were welcomed by the client. Final drawings were
prepared and the large contract was awarded to Rackline.
The installation commenced on the 01 December 2008 and will be
completed during February 2009.
The award of this major contract to Rackline was due to several factors.
Firstly, the client and their consultants were highly impressed by the quality of the layout drawings and tender submission which refl ects great credit on our Technical Department and Sales Offi ce. They were also impressed
that all their questions were easily answered because of the involvement of
the correct Rackline personnel throughout the process and at the various
meetings. These included our Sales Managers, Sales Offi ce, Technical
Department and Production Director. Communication has been excellent
and has proved vital in establishing a relationship of partnership between
the Museum, Turner and Townsend and Rackline.
The success of this Project clearly demonstrates the capability of
Rackline to handle a particularly complex client brief through excellence in
teamwork, technical expertise and high quality of products and solutions.
