Long, bulky or oddly-shaped loads rarely fit standard shelves. Here’s how cantilever shelving, widespan and shortspan systems each solve that differently.

Most shelving is designed around boxes, totes, or small parts that stack neatly onto a flat shelf. Long lengths of timber, pipe, or sheet material, and bulky or heavy components that don’t sit well on a standard shelf at all, need something built specifically for that shape of load, which is where cantilever, widespan and shortspan systems come in.

Why standard shelving fails for these loads

A standard shelf needs front-to-back support and a shelf surface underneath the load, both of which get in the way when the item is longer than the shelf, oddly shaped, or too heavy to rest on a light-duty deck. Forcing long or bulky loads onto standard shelving usually means wasted space, awkward handling, or genuine damage risk.

Cantilever shelving: support without front posts

Cantilever shelving uses arms that extend out from a single upright column, with no supporting post at the front of the load. That open front means long items, timber, pipe, steel bar, sheet material, can be loaded and unloaded from the side without obstruction, and length isn’t limited by shelf depth the way it would be on a standard unit.

Widespan shelving: wide bays for bulky items

Widespan shelving uses fewer, further-apart uprights to create wide, boltless bays that suit bulky or irregularly shaped items which don’t fit a standard narrow shelf run. It’s a common choice for stock that’s heavy but not especially long, tyres, engine parts, larger retail stock, where the priority is a bigger, sturdier bay rather than an open front.

Shortspan shelving: density for heavier small items

Shortspan shelving sits at the other end of the scale, a heavy-duty boltless system with closer upright spacing, built for smaller but heavier components that would overload standard light-duty shelving. It’s a strong fit for parts stores, workshops, and stockrooms handling a high volume of dense, hand-picked items.

Choosing between them by load shape, not habit

The decision genuinely follows from the shape and weight of what you’re storing: long items with an unobstructed load/unload need point to cantilever, bulky irregular items point to widespan, and dense heavier small parts point to shortspan. Defaulting to whichever system a warehouse already has, rather than matching it to the actual stock, is one of the most common ways floor space and handling time both get wasted.

Combining systems in one store

Most warehouses handling a varied stock profile end up running more than one of these systems side by side, cantilever for timber and sheet stock, shortspan for small heavy parts, standard shelving for everything else. Planning the mix at layout stage, rather than adding systems piecemeal as problems show up, keeps the overall floor plan coherent.
