Storage equipment safety body SEMA has been vocal in 2026 about the risks of poor racking maintenance, from DIY repairs that mask underlying damage to counterfeit or unverified suppliers putting warehouses at risk. As racking systems age and warehouses push for more capacity from the same footprint, the margin for error keeps shrinking.
What a proper pallet racking inspection should cover
A thorough inspection looks at more than obvious dents. It should check upright and beam alignment, base plate and floor fixings, load notices and signage, and any signs of overloading or impact damage. Damage is typically colour-coded by severity, so everyone on site knows what needs fixing now and what can be monitored.
Who should be doing them
Day-to-day visual checks can be carried out by trained staff, but a periodic in-depth inspection should be signed off by a SEMA-Approved Rack Inspector (SARI) or an equivalent competent person. This isn’t just best practice — the Health and Safety Executive expects racking to be inspected as part of a warehouse’s wider duty of care under work equipment regulations.
How often you need to inspect
Most warehouses should carry out weekly or monthly visual checks internally, alongside a formal expert inspection at least once every 12 months. Higher-traffic sites, older installations, or racking that’s seen recent impact damage may need inspecting more frequently.
The cost of skipping it
Beyond the obvious safety risk, unchecked racking damage tends to get more expensive the longer it’s left. A minor repair caught early is far cheaper than emergency downtime, stock loss, or the liability that comes with an incident. Insurers increasingly ask for inspection records too, so it’s not just a safety issue but a commercial one.
