Why reducing warehouse picking errors is a layout problem first
A picker moving quickly through a warehouse relies on the layout to guide them correctly, not just on concentration, and a layout that makes two different SKUs look and sit the same way removes exactly the visual cues that prevent mistakes. Treating picking errors as a training issue when the layout itself is the problem means the same mistakes keep happening no matter how well staff are briefed.
Location coding that actually helps
A clear, consistent location coding system, aisle, bay, level, position, gives pickers an unambiguous answer to “is this the right spot,” rather than relying on memory or a vague description. The value of a coding system comes entirely from consistency, a system used properly in one aisle and loosely in the next is barely better than no system at all.
Separating similar-looking SKUs deliberately
Products that look alike, similar packaging, similar size, similar colour, cause a disproportionate share of picking errors when they sit next to each other on the same racking or shelving run. Deliberately spacing similar items apart, rather than grouping them by category alone, removes the single easiest mistake for a picker to make.
Labelling that’s readable at working speed, not just accurate
A label that’s technically correct but too small, too low, or poorly lit isn’t actually doing its job, since pickers working at speed need to read it in a glance, not stop and study it. Clear shelf-edge labelling, positioned at eye level where possible, closes a gap that a perfectly accurate location system can otherwise leave open.
How container choice affects accuracy too
The right bin and tote setup plays directly into accuracy, since a fast-moving SKU sharing a container with a slower-moving one, or containers that all look identical regardless of contents, both increase the chance of a wrong pick.
