The University of Liverpool - Ronald Ross - Laboratory Storage Expansion.

When it came to expanding its Laboratory Storage, the University of Liverpool chose Rackline to fit out its store room.

About The Client

The University of Liverpool (UOL) is a Red Brick research university situated in Liverpool, England. Founded in 1881 as University College Liverpool, Victoria University, it gained independence by Royal Charter in 1903 attaining the decree to award degrees.

In 2010 the University named its new biological science building “The Ronald Ross Building” (after Ronald Ross who won a Nobel Prize in 1902 for his work on the transmission of malaria). The building is home to (amongst other areas) the university’s facility for the Institute of Infection and Global Health.

The Requirement

In 2014 the University teams were aware of their expanding needs, and looking at ways to maximise the laboratory storage space within the Ronald Ross Building. Having identified a room to convert for this purpose, and aware of the huge cross section of materials it needed to store, they looked for a partner to support them.

Rackline was chosen based on its experience in the educational and research sectors, with a huge cross section of case studies the team at the university knew that its team could help them get the most from the space.

The Solution

The Rackline team visited site, and catalogued the supplies that needed to be stored. Knowing the weights and dimensions allowed them to suggest several layouts to provide sufficient laboratory storage for their needs.

When it came to the storage, Rackline’s teams manufactured and installed 67 bays of its time-tested Profile static shelving, all at 600mm deep, with varying widths from 903mm to 1203mm. In total they installed shelving providing 316 linear meters of extra storage for the labs. These shelves can be adjusted as their inventory and needs change.

The Profile shelving is manufactured from Steel and extremely robust, capable of taking even the heaviest items (each bay will carry a 750kg load and a standard shelf load of 90kgs). The laboratory storage shelving is also powder coated in White. This not only provides a tough, chip and corrosion resistant surface but it also provides an easy to clean solution, ideal for laboratory environments.

The Result

The result for the University is the addition of a large storage space to accommodate all its laboratory equipment and supplies. The installed shelving is adjustable to the changing needs of the laboratories it services, and can be expanded and modified as required.
