About The Client
Getty Images Holdings, Inc. (gettyimages) is a media rights company and a supplier of stock images, editorial photography, video, and music for business and consumers. Its primary markets are creative professionals (advertising and graphic design), the media (print and online publishing), and corporate (in-house design, marketing and communication departments). The business boasts a library of over 477 million assets including millions stored within its London Archive.
The Requirement

The smaller of the two sites needed to be consolidated into their larger stores.
Getty images (Getty) holds a repository of many millions of items, many digital but also an immense library of physical slides, images and other items within its London facilities. This collection is constantly growing, and contains many irreplaceable, unique items. It is the responsibility of the Getty teams to not only keep these items safe, and in the perfect conditions for their continued preservation, but also to ensure that these items are catalogued correctly, and accessible.
Prior to this installation Getty’s London collections storage was spread across two separate sites. These were fitted out with shelving and storage solutions that kept the collections safe, and organised to a reasonable degree. However access to these items to deposit and recover them was problematic due to their divided nature (there was a drive of around an hour between them). In addition, the maintenance and staffing of these two separate sites was costly,
The decision was made to consolidate the operations and storage into the larger of these sites and look at high density options to give them capacity for their existing storage requirements, and their future needs.
To achieve this the team looked to find a partner to undertake both the archive move and provide plans to consolidate all the items in to one space. Rackline were contacted, and the team visited both sites to comprehensively audit the existing storage provision, the proposed space and the items to be stored.
Taking this information into account, they then created a series of plans that made the most of the space available both horizontally and vertically. These took into account the numerous varieties of standard storage in use, the existing storage to be moved, and outlined the specialist storage solutions required to keep the photo slides and other delicate items safe.
The Solution
Rackline’s team helped Getty to catalogue and safely move its archive across sites. Utilising the 670 existing cradles from their smaller store, Rackline expanding on these and added a range of shelving units, adapted to fit their unique needs.
The primary shelving chosen was Rackline’s time tested steel Profile system. These units were fitted both as static units, and to Rackline’s robust multitrak roller racking bases to save 70% of the space compared to static rows of shelves.
The shelving was designed to fit around their standard box and file sizes, but provided as adjustable units for flexibility for the future. Roller and static shelving was fitted with adaptions to use slide cradles and hanging file rails.
Post the implementation, the Getty team now have 265 linear metres of shelf storage combined with 675 linear metres of pullout cradle storage. This is ample for their current requirements, and gives them capacity for their future needs.
The Result
Through the move, and re-working of the space, the Getty team has gained a huge amount of capacity and reduced a great deal of overhead cost. The tailored storage solutions are designed to both complement their existing systems and precisely fit their inventory, providing the confidence that the media they’re storing will be safe for years to come.
