About the Client
The Winterbourne Academy, is a co-educational school in South Gloucestershire. The school is in the village of Winterbourne in South Gloucestershire, on the outskirts of Bristol, England.
The Academy has expanded since its inception, providing services such as a technology college, Arts Centre and Sixth Form. Since 2006 it has offered the International Baccalaureate, becoming the first school in South Gloucestershire to offer this qualification, and even attracting students from abroad. It hosts the most popular Sixth Form in the county, with children joining at the age of 16 from all of the other local secondary schools.
The Requirement
With an ever expanding student body and a corresponding need for space, the team at Winterbourne academy were looking for ways to maximise their lab and teaching spaces by safely storing away its scientific tools and equipment. This included loose scientific items (such as glass tubes, slides and hand tools), chemicals, equipment including microscopes, and sundry stationary items.
With space already allocated within the school, and a good percentage of their store stock in Gratnells trays, they were looking for a solution that would provide provision for these trays alongside regular shelving. This needed to maximise the space available, safely store these items away from unauthorised individuals, and remove the need to store items within the labs themselves.
The Solution
The team at Winterbourne engaged with Rackline based on its teams proven ability to maximise space and efficiency within educational environments.
Rackline’s team visited site, examined the space available, the structure of the building, and the items that needed to be stored there. The experienced team then created plans to encompass their requirements.
After consulting with the Winterbourne team, and adjustments, the team at Rackline recommended and installed its monotrak roller racking bases, topped with Prospan steel shelving. The Prospan was installed with a mixture of both shelves, and tray rails to allow for the high density storage of Gratnells trays.
In total 64 bays of Prospan were installed providing 44 linear meters of shelving, together with space for 540 Gratnells Trays.

The Result
The Winterbourne Academy Science department now has far more storage space, with provision for now and the future. The installed metal shelving systems are designed to take even their heaviest objects, and the shelving is easily adjusted to take any items that the department acquires. The sturdy Gratnells tray storage easily houses their collection with space for future expansion. The extra storage safely houses their collection, and keeps potentially dangerous materials from getting into the hands of students.
